On the other hand, writing for ourselves alone can get very boring. I love writing, but to me the real joy comes when I see someone absolutely entertained by something that I've crafted - be it a novel manuscript or an extremely twisted short story.

It's just the way I work - I always try to imagine the people enjoying my writing, and so do my best to put out something worth reading ... getting published is very attractive, to me - in fact I'm sure its a life long dream for many of us. :-)

Is the love of writing empowering? I'd say that it is, indeed.

"If ... everyone has a novel in them, most people would be best advised to keep it there" is pretty funny. But true! In hard copy and on line, there is a mountain of bad writing out there. Of course what's bad is subjective. Luckily, finishing and rewriting a novel is so much hard work that most people never achieve it. And true, getting published is very difficult, even when the work is good. Remember that JK Rowling was rejected by many publishers before an underling took a glance at the MS and was caught up. I guess writing must be about the process itself and not just the "reward" of getting published. For those of us who are afflicted with the need to write, writing itself provides the joy.
