Very interesting thoughts - I totally agree that we need a central collection place for digfic, similar to iTunes or Rhapsody. I actually wonder whether a NEW collection place (unfamiliar to most of the public) is necessary, or whether we can work our way into iTunes or another already very familiar marketplace.

If iTunes or Amazon.com were to offer a digital fiction section (they promote a lot of free entertainment to bring more people into the site in general), you'd fill one half of your Long Tail requirement: the Head. You'd get the internet readers, those using the net for their entertainment, sure. But you'd also intro a whole new lot to digital fiction: those who simply read, but use the net to source their offline entertainment.

Something for us to think about.

The Long Tail and The Tipping Point are two of my favorite business books.

These books really compel you to think.

Like Steve Jobs used to say - "Bicycles for the mind."

Definitely true, Spotty, especially when it comes to Gen Y (current 13-29 year olds) - they don't like being told what to like, so they value word of mouth more than ads.

I think one good way of answering those last two points is to take a good look at Pages Unbound. Every author on there should be placing a link somewhere on their website/blog/whatever to Pages Unbound and label it somehow as somewhere to go for more reading.

As more stories get added to PU, then more links will be going towards PU too, more and more of that 99% will find out about it, and start using it. The more people start using it, the more word gets around about a great little website that you can use to find stuff to read on.

To quote one Ms Erin, "Advertising is expensive, talk is cheap." Beyond that, word of mouth is a much better incentive to people to actually check something out than an advertisement.

Print is Dead, Books in our<em> Digital Age</em>, you say? Hrmm. Seems fishy to me, if he didn't talk much about the Internet.

It is interesting that I have seen a couple of printed books on the market now about how the book is dying. 'Print is Dead, Books in our Digital Age,' by Jeff Gomez, is a prime example of this. Gomez spends much of the book quoting texts that are centuries old, while choosing to ignore the web novel completely, serial or otherwise, as a viable option to say, the publisher distributed E-Book. In fact, the only reference to online text in book format seems to be the hypertext/flash, choose your own adventure experimental done way back when.

It would be interesting to hear Gomez' take on the long tail, and other factors of the press.

Hmm. Good point. My personal secret plan is to see if I can get reviews of and interviews with the "head" items and then hope that they link back to me.

I'm still working my way through your archives. Perhaps I'll have something longer to say by the time I've caught up to you.
