Janet Fitch’s 10 writing tips that can help almost anyone:

The writer is both a sadist and a masochist. We create people we love, and then we torture them. Sometimes we try to protect them from getting booboos that are too big. Don’t. This is your protagonist, not your kid.

I’m afraid I have to disagree with the ‘torture your protagonist/be a sadist’ thing. I can tell when an author is artificially torturing a character, and it turns me off. If you can’t create a conflict organically out of your character’s personality and the situation they’re in, you shouldn’t be making one up. :,
