Fine speech, spot-on on web writer motivation (OK, I do web COMIX, but storytelling is storytelling). I respect your decision to avoid talking about money-making, since that one hasn't been cracked by any web writers yet ;o) Otherwise, I have yet to see a speech/blog-post summing up all the essentials of web fiction even half as well as you do above.

Checked out your Pandamian alpha/demo. Very nice Table of contents is a bit out of style - looks like my own FrontPage Express hack-ups ;o) Guess it ain't the final version?

Other than that, it's damn good work already. Sure, it's an alpha, but every page oozes the IDEA of making it effortless to read a book; clean, intuitive and instantly "masterable". Many interface designers could learn a lot just by looking at your alpha!!!

@Gavin: To be honest, right now we really have to deliver on all the promises. And that's going to be hard work for quite a bit.

@Yipeng: Thank you! Let's go change publishing, ae?! :)

@Meng: Thank you. I should've guessed you'd quote something that puts me to shame! That's a marvelous (and true!) abstraction of what I said, and in a sentence, to boot!

Eli you're my hero!

I had to learn how to use Wordpress and Blogger and Drupal, and while they have their good points none of them are easy. I've been dragging my feet on learning how to Epub for Kindle and Ipad or whatever because it takes time and energy, and I have enough trouble finding time to write chapters for my stories when I'm busy raising three kids and paying for a mortgage.

Having a place where it's point and click and finished sounds awesome, I'm really excited to see that Pandamian is finally lifting off. Congrats!

Forgive me, Bekah. What I meant to say is that we have to build enough things into Pandamian to make it's attractive enough for writers, before we'll consider migration tools. But - yes, fear not, we'll certainly be giving quite a bit of thought to it. :)

If it's simple to use (which it sounds like it will be) and can easily make my site pretty it'll be attractive to me.

Relative simplicity and a range of attractive themes is what drew me to choose Wordpress over other current CMSs. But I'm well aware that I'm relatively tech savvy and even Wordpress might confuse other people. If I know what I want I can generally use Google to find a tutorial for it and even so there's been a couple of times when tweaking my theme has had my hair falling out and I'm sure there are several places where my design could still be smoother.

@MCM: Thank you. That was incredibly kind.

@Becka: Yes we have. Migration from other digital platforms are trivial - it's migrations from books, or scans that's going to be hard. This feature's not going into the first couple of iterations, though. No point to build bridges when the island itself isn't attractive, or useful. We have to make sure you'll want to use Pandamian before we even consider building migration tools.

Pandamian does sound like it's going to be awesome, but (and there's always a but isn't there) have you given much thought to migration issues?

I know it's early days, but let's suppose when you release it it's so cool that I want to migrate Firebird Fiction to it.

At the moment Firebird Fiction uses Wordpress as its CMS, I'm mostly happy with the site design, and it already has over 100 entries with permalinks. As far as I know if I were to migrate to a new CMS I'd lose my design and link structure at the very least. So even if I wanted to migrate I probably wouldn't unless it was really easy to do so.

I just want to say I would have loved to have seen you deliver this in person. It's a truly great read. I know Pandamian is going to kick ass, because you understand the key factor in making it work: the technology needs to be boring. This is me, after the fact, giving you a standing ovation :)
