Linked: Livestream of the Barnes & Noble Special Announcement

Liveblogging the Barnes & Noble Special Announcement. The new Nook looks great: 2 months battery life, soft contoured back, $139. And B&N are taking a very aggressive stance against the Kindle.

2 months battery life?! That’s insane. I still won’t ditch the iPad 2 tho.

Amazon has won a strategic victory here in Oz, tho. People tend to refer to e-readers of any kind as ‘Kindles’. I think that sort of generic use of a name is a big marketing plus.

    Letitia, that is. Amazing.

That is interesting. That being said, I wonder if it’ll work better for them than it did for the company that makes Kleenex tissue paper. For whatever reason (in the US at least), people often refer to any kind of tissue paper as kleenex. Unfortunately for them, it’s mostly made the issue of who makes what tissue paper confusing, and they’ve had to use lawyers to protect their trademark.

Things may work differently for e-readers (which are, after all, expensive electronics) than tissue paper (which people blow their noses in and throw away).

Also, just for the record, I want one.

Smashwords cooperates with B & N, and I’m pleased with the way the ebooks I’ve issued via Smashwords are made available for the Nook. Unlike Amazon, you can choose not to charge anything for your books, as I’ve done, or you can set a price.

For the record, Eli, I now own one of these. It’s currently charging for first use. We’ll see what I think of it later.

That sounds brilliant, Jim. Want to do a guest post on how it is? :)

Sure. I’ve been using it for a couple days now, and I’ve got some initial thoughts.

I suppose in an ideal world, I’d give it a couple months (to see if the battery really does last that long), but I feel like I could write a fair review in a week or so.
